ICSULA 2024
III. International Conference on Sustainable Cities and Urban Landscapes:
December 13-14, 2024 / Kyrenia, TRNC
ICSULA-2024
It is my pleasure and honor to invite you to the International Conference on Sustainable Cities and Urban Landscapes (ICSULA 2024) which will be held “face-to-face and online” on 13-14 December 2024.
The first and second “Conferences on Sustainable Cities and Urban Landscapes -ICSULA 2022 and ICSULA 2023”, which were hosted by Selçuk University Faculty of Architecture and Design in the past years were successfully completed with the participation of different planning and design disciplines (https://www.iksadkongre.com/icsula2022 and https://tr.iksadkongre.com/icsula2023).
In the congresses organized in the past two years, many scientists and experts from planning and design sciences have participated in the framework of sustainable urban development. Following these congresses, “III. International Conference on Sustainable Cities and Urban Landscapes” -ICSULA 2024- aims to bring together qualified scientists from around the world, to present and share their valuable research on urban studies and to bring them together on a common international platform. The third ICSULA conference (ICSULA 2024) will be held in Northern Cyprus Turkish Republic (Kyrenia) on December 13-14, 2024 on behalf of Selçuk University Faculty of Architecture and Design. The languages of ICSULA 2024 are English and Turkish.
Although cities and their urban landscapes differ in environmental, cultural and economic terms depending on their geography, they face similar problems in terms of sustainability. Urban areas often have high population densities, complex transportation networks, dense commercial and industrial areas, which can exacerbate existing environmental and health problems and social inequalities. Under these cirumstances cities have responsibilities to achieve a more sustainable future.
With the earthquake disaster in Turkey last year, the issue of sustainable future has come to the agenda more intensely with a painful experience. In this context, it has become imperative to develop new strategies for our cities which have been severely damaged and their inhabitants. After the earthquake, in an environment where housing problems which are primarily addressed for citizens who do not leave the cities, need to be addressed from socio-economic, socio-cultural and ecological perspectives, some studies have been carried out and some studies continue to be carried out.
Under the heading of sustainable cities, the conference aims to present and discuss studies on resilient cities which will make a significant contribution to achieving this and papers aiming to evaluate the post-earthquake process in Turkey in terms of “sustainability”. In this context, the urbanization problems still experienced in the cities where the earthquake occurred, strategic approaches for the future, what has been done, what has not been done and what has not been done “yet” will be discussed.
Topics on Sustainable Cities and Urban Landscapes:
In this conference, what needs to be done in order to restore the quality of life and urban sustainability in cities that have been diminished/lost as a result of human activities and natural disasters will be discussed in terms of the factors that cause the problems and short and long term solutions. These solutions include all kinds of physical planning issues that include the city and urban landscape and serve sustainability as well as non-physical planning issues that underpin these issues.
In this context, ecological planning and design approaches in cities and especially in earthquake-affected cities;
- ecological planning and design approaches in line with the analysis and synthesis of natural data (geological structure, climate, hydrology, etc.)
- planning approaches in the context of changing socio-cultural and economic structure
- rethinking the planning and design of open and green spaces
- transportation and settlement strategies
- natural and historical environmental protection approaches
- zoning policies (problems, potentials)
- the concept of migration
- financial solutions
- tourism and recreation
- new planning and design technologies
- smart city applications
- climate change
- universal design
- urban morphology and eco-morphological approaches
- green technology and innovative strategies and policies of decision makers
- academic training in planning and design
- pandemic and the city
- urban, food and energy strategies
- beautiful city principles
Many issues can be addressed at the scales of planning and design, theory and practice, and management. This should be addressed from a regional development perspective in the context of creating spatial strategies.
ICSULA 2024 meets the academic promotion criteria of the relevant institutions, including assignment to the positions of associate professor and professor for the Scientific and Advisory Board, as well as the diversity of participating countries. Papers presented at the Symposium, English abstracts or full texts will be published in the Symposium Proceedings with ISBN. In addition, participants may apply to journals indexed in the TR Index and International index in which case only the “abstract” will be published in the “symposium book” as the full text of the papers will be published in the journal. Papers can only be published if they comply with the publication policies and referee processes of the journals. Therefore, the processes of the journals are not related to the conference organizing committee.
